Copacabana was subdivided in 1954 and built up through the 1960s–70s. The original clay
sewer pipes, galvanised steel water lines, and concrete stormwater connections are now
50–70 years old — at or past their expected lifespan.

Copacabana is built on steep terrain rising from the beach. Many homes sit well above street
