"New tenant was about to move into our unit and I realised there were no RCDs installed. Messaged Alljack and had three quotes within the hour. Electrician installed safety switches on all circuits the following morning, certificate provided. Compliant before move-in."
"Quick, professional, sorted."
"RCDs installed across the board. No more issues. Good job."
Safety switches have a small “T” or “Test” button on the face of the device. If the breakers on the switchboard have no test button, there are no RCDs installed — the property has no personal shock protection.
Properties with screw-in ceramic fuses have zero RCD protection and typically need a full switchboard replacement before RCDs can be fitted. Very common in Central Coast homes built before 1980.
RCDs were not required on power outlet circuits in NSW until 1991, and not on lighting circuits until 2000. Any pre-1991 property that hasn’t been electrically upgraded is very unlikely to have compliant protection — and is in breach of NSW rental minimum standards.
NSW requires separate RCDs for power outlet circuits and lighting circuits. A single shared RCD is non-compliant and means the whole house loses power when it trips. Modern installations use individual RCDs or RCBOs per circuit for better fault isolation.
Since 23 March 2020, RCDs must be installed before any new tenant moves in. If you can’t produce a compliance certificate or confirm the RCDs are present and tested, you are already in breach. Penalties for individual landlords can reach $1,100.

Approximately 26% of Central Coast households rent — around 25,000–30,000 rental dwellings. The majority are separate houses, with a large proportion built before 1991 when RCDs first became mandatory on power circuits. Many pre-1991 properties have never been electrically upgraded, making RCD non-compliance extremely common in the region.
Whether RCDs can be added to an existing board or a full upgrade is needed depends on the board’s age and type. The electrician will assess this on inspection (or from a photo you send via WhatsApp) before quoting.
From 1 May 2023, only Type A or Type B RCDs may be installed — older Type AC devices are banned from new work under updated wiring rules.
The NSW Residential Tenancies Regulation 2019 requires switchboard-mounted RCDs on all power outlet and lighting circuits in rental properties. Powerpoint-style RCDs do not meet the standard.
Adding RCDs to an existing switchboard typically costs $190–$350 per unit on the Central Coast. For rental compliance you need at least two — one for power outlet circuits and one for lighting circuits — bringing the total to around $400–$700. If your board is a ceramic fuse box or too old to accept modern RCDs, a full switchboard upgrade is required at $800–$1,300 for a standard home. With Alljack you get 3 competitive quotes to compare.
Yes. Under the NSW Residential Tenancies Regulation 2019, all rental properties must have switchboard-mounted RCDs protecting all power outlet and all lighting circuits. The compliance deadline for all existing properties has passed. Any new tenant moving in without RCDs in place means the landlord is in breach and faces penalties up to $1,100 for individuals and $5,500 for companies.
No. Powerpoint-style RCDs only protect that one outlet — they don’t satisfy the NSW minimum standard which requires switchboard-level circuit protection. A licensed electrician must install switchboard-mounted RCDs covering the entire power and lighting circuit load.
No — ceramic fuse boards cannot accept modern DIN-rail RCDs. A full switchboard upgrade is required, replacing the entire board with modern circuit breakers and RCDs. This is common in Central Coast homes built before 1980 in areas like Gosford, Woy Woy, and Wyong. Costs typically run $800–$1,300 for a standard residential replacement including RCDs.
